The Boys Vintage Aviation Nursery
When I found out I was pregnant with Liam I could not wait to decorate a nursery for him. This was before I even considered starting a Etsy Shop for nursery bedding. From day one I was convinced I was having a girl. I don’t know if it is because I come from a family of mostly girls or the fact that I just could not fathom having a boy, (…jokes on me as now I have two!) but I was convinced he was a girl. It wasn’t until that 20 week ultrasound and seeing that he was undoubtedly a boy that it hit me. Suddenly, I became significantly less excited to decorate.
I was a first-time mom, so if you think I didn’t already scour every store and all over the internet for both girl and boy nursery things, well you’re crazy. Since I was convinced Liam was a girl, I had colors and themes all picked out. I was so excited to leave that ultrasound and finalize my baby registry.
Well now I was lost..
The Interior Decorator in me was completely dumbfounded. I had no idea what I wanted. I had no idea where to start. I suddenly became one of my clients in desperate need of a little advice and a little inspiration. Everything I came across for a boy nursery was so blahhh. Filled with baby blues and cheesy clip art animals and all the clichés, I was not having any of that.
So, I decided to settle with the neutral grey, navy blue and white. I made my own unique bedding and fell in love with the process, which is why I opened Fraiche Baby! I went with an elephant theme on my baby registry. But, I wasn’t thrilled. It was just okay, nothing special and a bit boring.
It wasn’t until Tim’s aunt bought Liam two vintage airplanes from a flea market that inspiration seemed to hit me and it all clicked. Tim works in Aerospace and he works directly across from the airport. So, up came the boys Vintage Aviation themed nursery. This nursery theme came to be gradually, as does most of the decor in my house, and I honestly couldn’t be more thrilled.
Now the theme is a bit mixed, since the room does have quite a few elephant items, but they’re neutral so I’m justifying it. If you ask Tim he would most likely say I’ve become obsessed with the Aviation theme, but truthfully I’ve just loved making the items to put in there!
I am pretty crafty, so many of the items in the nursery are DIY or are refurbished, which is great because this nursery is totally doable if you’re looking to do something similar! I’ve already had a few requests for a tutorial on the DIY drop cloth curtains, so I’m considering a follow up post. My living room needs curtains, so a follow up post might be a great excuse!
